SUMMARY OF APPLICABLE LAWS CONTAINED IN THE PRIVATE ACT FOR
RUTHERFORD COUNTY, SENATE BILL No. 1161
RABIES VACCINATION
Every dog and cat over three months of age must have a current vaccination
against rabies.
CARE
- Animals must have shelter with 3 walls, a floor off the ground and
ceiling that has room for them to stand up and turn around in
- Must have fresh water at all times
- Must be provided food each day, when you eat, your pet needs to
eat

RUNNING-AT-LARGE
It is unlawful to permit a dog or cat to roam at large (off the owner's
premises).
Exceptions:
- When the animal is being walked without leash in the immediate
neighborhood under the supervision and control of the owner.
- Hunting
dogs when involved in hunting during the open season for the game
for which the animal is trained or bred.
FEMALE DOGS IN HEAT
Female dogs in heat must be confined for 24 days from the first signs
of heat. Failure to comply can result in a fine from $5 to $50.
IMPOUNDING OF ANIMALS
- Any dog or cat found running-at-large on a public road or off the
owner's premises may be seized by officials or the owner, agent or
occupant of property upon which the dog or cat may be found.
- The
owner or custodian must pay the required fees to redeem the animal.
- If an impounded animal is not wearing a tag or collar and is not
claimed by the owner within 3 days, the animal may be offered for
adoption or
destroyed by the county.
- When the owner is known, if no one redeems
the animal within 5 days, the county may destroy the animal.
